Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
