Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
